Cancer Charity Initiative in Uganda

Africa Gold Suppliers Limited — Cancer Charity Initiative in Uganda

At Africa Gold Suppliers Limited, we believe that the strength of a company is ultimately measured not just by the quality of its products or the integrity of its transactions, but by what it gives back to the communities from which it draws its purpose. Gold is mined from the earth of Africa by African people — and the proceeds of that industry carry a responsibility to those same people, particularly the most vulnerable among them. That belief is the foundation of our cancer charity programme in Uganda, a long-running community initiative through which we extend free support, awareness, and care services to cancer patients and their families across the country.

Why Cancer Charity in Uganda? Understanding the Need

Cancer is one of Uganda’s most urgent and least adequately addressed public health crises. The Uganda Cancer Institute — the country’s only dedicated cancer treatment centre — serves a population of over 48 million people with facilities that were built for a fraction of that demand.

Across Uganda’s districts, the majority of cancer cases are diagnosed at Stage III or Stage IV — too late for curative treatment, when palliative care is the only remaining option — because awareness is low, screening programmes are minimal, and the cost of diagnostic tests places early detection beyond the reach of most rural and semi-urban households.

Breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, oesophageal cancer, and Kaposi’s sarcoma are among the most prevalent cancer types in Uganda. Cervical cancer alone is the leading cause of cancer death among Ugandan women — a tragedy made more acute by the fact that it is largely preventable through HPV vaccination and treatable when detected early through Pap smear screening.

The gap between what is medically possible and what is actually delivered to patients in Uganda is wide, and it is this gap that drives our charitable commitment.

For over six years, Africa Gold Suppliers Limited has been working alongside a group of dedicated individuals who began privately supporting cancer patients in Uganda as far back as 2014. Their direct experience in the field — witnessing the specific ways that patients fall through the cracks between diagnosis and treatment, between treatment and follow-up, between physical illness and the psychological devastation of a cancer diagnosis without adequate support — shaped our understanding of where charitable intervention creates the most genuine impact. From that partnership, our cancer charity programme was formalised, and the commitment to build a real, permanent cancer support infrastructure in Uganda was made.

Our Cancer Charity Mission — What We Are Working to Achieve

The mission of Africa Gold Suppliers Limited’s cancer charity programme is to reduce the burden of cancer on Ugandan patients and their families through a comprehensive, evidence-informed set of interventions that address cancer at every stage — from prevention through awareness, early detection through free screening, active treatment through access to care, and end-of-life wellbeing through palliative support.

Our charity is not a marketing exercise or a token gesture. It is a structural commitment backed by time, resources, and long-term partnerships with credible international organisations. We recognise that ending cancer suffering in Uganda requires more than occasional donations — it requires building institutions, training healthcare workers, shifting public attitudes, and advocating for cancer to be treated as the national priority it deserves to be.

Our charitable goals encompass five interconnected areas:

Cancer awareness and community education — reaching communities across Uganda with clear, culturally sensitive information about cancer risk factors, warning signs, and the critical importance of early detection. Many Ugandans still associate a cancer diagnosis with death — a culturally entrenched fatalism that delays help-seeking behaviour and results in late-stage presentation. Changing this narrative through community health education is the foundational work from which everything else flows.

Free cancer screening and early detection services — partnering with clinics, hospitals, and mobile health units to provide free or subsidised cervical cancer screening, breast cancer examination, prostate cancer PSA testing, and other cancer detection services in communities where cost is the primary barrier to early diagnosis.

Patient support services — providing direct, practical support to cancer patients navigating the Ugandan health system: assistance with transport to treatment facilities, nutritional support during treatment, psychosocial counselling for patients and families, and connection to the full range of available resources. Our Centres of Hope — community-based support hubs — are designed to be the first point of contact for patients who have received a cancer diagnosis and do not know where to turn next.

Palliative care and pain management — ensuring that patients with advanced or terminal cancer receive dignified, compassionate end-of-life care with appropriate pain management. Palliative care is severely underdeveloped across sub-Saharan Africa, and Uganda is no exception.

Our palliative programme trains community health workers in basic pain management principles and provides access to morphine and other essential palliative medicines in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

Cancer treatment access — our most ambitious long-term goal is to establish a dedicated cancer treatment facility in Uganda, equipped with radiation therapy infrastructure, chemotherapy services, surgical oncology capacity, and the comprehensive multi-disciplinary team of oncologists, radiologists, nurses, and counsellors that modern cancer care requires.

This will be achieved through a combination of lobbying for government investment, international fundraising campaigns, corporate donations, and grant applications to international health foundations.

Our Centres of Hope — Cancer Patient Support Hubs in Uganda

The cornerstone of our direct patient service model is the Centres of Hope — a network of community-based support centres established in partnership with local health facilities to provide a welcoming, accessible first point of contact for cancer patients and their families in Uganda.

A Centre of Hope is not a hospital. It is a community space where cancer patients — whether newly diagnosed, in active treatment, or in post-treatment recovery — can access information, peer support, counselling, and practical assistance without charge.

Staffed by trained community health workers and volunteer counsellors, the Centres of Hope perform several critical functions that the formal health system lacks the capacity to deliver consistently.

Cancer patients who arrive at a Centre of Hope receive a comprehensive needs assessment that identifies their immediate medical, social, psychological, and economic needs. From this assessment, a personalised support plan is developed that may include referral to specialist oncology care, assistance with transport costs to the Uganda Cancer Institute, connection to food support programmes, enrolment in psychosocial counselling sessions, and peer-matching with other patients at similar stages of their cancer journey.

The peer support dimension of the Centres of Hope — connecting patients who have navigated the same diagnosis and treatment experience — is consistently identified by service users as the most valuable aspect of what we provide.

We are actively expanding the Centre of Hope model to additional Ugandan districts, with priority given to areas where cancer diagnosis rates are high and existing health infrastructure is weakest.

Our Global Partnerships in Cancer Control

No single organisation can address the scale of Uganda’s cancer burden alone. Africa Gold Suppliers Limited has established formal partnerships with international cancer organisations whose expertise, resources, and networks complement and amplify our on-the-ground programme in Uganda.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive cancer research, education, and patient support organisations, funding billions of dollars of cancer research and providing services to millions of patients and caregivers across the globe.

Our partnership with the ACS provides our Uganda programme with access to a robust collection of evidence-based cancer information — clinical guidelines, patient education materials, caregiver support resources, and research summaries — that we adapt and contextualise for the Ugandan patient and community health worker audience.

The ACS’s principle that cancer support should be available to all people affected by cancer regardless of the stage of disease directly aligns with our own approach: from the newly diagnosed patient seeking information to the caregiver of a patient in palliative care, everyone in the cancer journey deserves access to quality support and information.

Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition

The Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition (GPCC) is a US-based organisation dedicated to promoting prostate cancer awareness and expanding access to early detection through free PSA screening events coordinated with clinics, urologists, and hospital partners across Georgia.

The GPCC’s model of community-based free prostate cancer screening — built on the insight that early detection saves lives and that cost must never be the reason a man does not get screened — directly informs our approach to free cancer screening in Ugandan communities.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa more broadly, yet awareness of the disease, its symptoms, and the availability of PSA testing remains very low.

Working alongside the GPCC’s expertise in community screening programme design, we are developing a Uganda prostate cancer early detection initiative that will deliver free PSA testing to men over 40 across targeted districts, with rapid referral pathways for those with elevated results.

How We Fund Our Cancer Charity Work — and How You Can Help

The cancer support work of Africa Gold Suppliers Limited is funded through a combination of corporate contributions from our gold and minerals business, targeted international fundraising campaigns, individual donations, and competitive grant applications to international health foundations and development organisations.

Corporate giving: A defined percentage of Africa Gold Suppliers Limited’s annual revenue from gold bar sales, gold dore bar transactions, and our broader minerals supply business is ringfenced for the charity programme each financial year.

This structural link between commercial success and charitable giving means that every purchase made through Africa Gold Suppliers Limited directly contributes to cancer care in Uganda.

International fundraising: We conduct annual fundraising campaigns targeting the East African diaspora in Europe, North America, and the Gulf region, as well as international corporate donors with CSR commitments in the health sector in sub-Saharan Africa.

Institutional grants: We actively pursue funding from international health foundations, bilateral development agencies, and global health initiatives with mandates that include cancer control in low-and-middle-income countries. The WHO’s Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR) and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) are among the international bodies whose frameworks inform our programme design.

Individual donations: Any individual who wishes to contribute directly to our cancer patient support work in Uganda can do so through our contact page. Donations of any size — from personal contributions to major philanthropic gifts — are received with genuine gratitude and directed entirely to programme delivery.

Our Vision for a Cancer-Free Uganda — The Hospital Plan

The most ambitious element of our long-term cancer charity strategy is the establishment of a dedicated cancer hospital in Uganda — a comprehensive oncology facility equipped with the full range of diagnostic, treatment, and supportive care services that cancer patients currently cannot access within Uganda without travelling to Nairobi, Cairo, or further afield at costs that most families simply cannot bear.

The planned facility will include a radiation therapy unit with modern linear accelerator technology for external beam radiotherapy — the treatment modality lacking entirely from most of Uganda’s existing health infrastructure. A chemotherapy day unit will provide infusion services for outpatient and short-stay patients.

A surgical oncology theatre will handle cancer surgeries currently performed without oncological specialist input in general surgery settings. ‘A cancer genetics and counselling unit will support families with hereditary cancer risk. And a palliative care ward will provide inpatient end-of-life care for patients in the terminal phase of illness who cannot remain at home.

This facility will be funded through the combination of government lobbying, international development grants, corporate fundraising, and individual major philanthropy.

We are currently engaged with the Ugandan Ministry of Health on the policy framework for private cancer facility establishment, and with international health architecture firms on facility design concepts. The hospital project is a long-term commitment — not an aspiration but a plan.

Cancer Awareness Campaigns — Reaching Communities Across Uganda

Awareness is where every effective cancer control programme begins. Before patients can seek screening, before families can support a loved one’s treatment, before communities can reduce the stigma that surrounds cancer diagnosis, they need accurate, accessible information in the language and cultural context that makes sense to them.

Africa Gold Suppliers Limited funds and participates in community cancer awareness campaigns across Uganda, working with local radio stations — still the most trusted and widely accessed information channel in rural Uganda — to broadcast cancer education content in local languages including Luganda, Runyankore, Acholi, and Langi.

We partner with local health centres to deliver community health talks at schools, churches, mosques, and market centres on topics including cervical cancer prevention, breast self-examination, prostate cancer risk factors, and the critical importance of early medical consultation when warning symptoms appear.

Our awareness campaigns are designed around the specific cancer literacy gaps identified through community needs assessments — addressing the myths that cancer is contagious, that cancer is a punishment, and that diagnosis means inevitable death.

Replacing these harmful narratives with evidence-based information that emphasises prevention, early detection, and the genuine treatability of many cancers when caught in early stages is the work that makes every other element of the programme possible.

Volunteering and Partnerships — Join Our Cancer Mission

Africa Gold Suppliers Limited welcomes partnerships with individuals, organisations, businesses, and health institutions who share our commitment to reducing cancer suffering in Uganda and across Africa.

Healthcare professionals who can contribute their expertise — oncologists, radiologists, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, or public health specialists — through volunteer clinical work, training delivery, or remote consultation services are among the most valuable contributors to our programme.

Corporate partners who wish to align their CSR investment with a documented, accountable, and genuinely impactful health programme in East Africa are invited to explore formal partnership arrangements that provide transparency, impact reporting, and brand alignment with a cause that resonates powerfully with global audiences.

Community health organisations across Uganda who are already working in cancer-adjacent areas — maternal and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS care, or general community health education — are natural partners for integrated programme delivery that reaches patients more efficiently through combined infrastructure.

To discuss any form of partnership, volunteering, or donation, please reach out through our contact page. We respond to all genuine enquiries within two business days.
